“The transgender Law Center is an Oakland-based nonprofit civil rights organization currently advocating on behalf of transgender communities everywhere. They were originally a federally funded project of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, now known simply as the NCLR. As part of their work to empower and educate transgender people, the transgender law center in Oakland also helps to protect their rights and provide referrals to local transgender organizations in areas across the country where transgender crime is on the rise. The Transgender Law Center has helped to place transgender children in foster homes and receive funds for transgender education and representation. While we do not wish for any child to be abused or exploited, nor do we wish for our nation to criminalize a group of citizens because of their gender identity, it is our duty as citizens to ensure that transgender children are provided equal opportunities in all areas of life.

They can be refused insurance coverage or services, faced discrimination when applying for jobs, and faced abuse and violence in the workplace. This can cost thousands of dollars in medical bills and create a huge financial burden for families. “This crisis is even more dangerous for transgender children. Since transgender children often feel safer speaking about their gender identity, they are often trans unaware of the risks of being transgender until they are older.”
When you have chosen to be transgender, you will have to decide how to legally change your name. If you had a legal name before transitioning, you should choose a new one after the transition. Your new name should match your gender marker (the letter ‘T’) exactly, and be a different letter than your current name. Your new name should not conflict with your social security number, driver’s license number, or any other identification document. You will need to present documentation that shows your new name and address, and your new social security card issued by your state, in order to obtain a corrected birth certificate.
